This was the first event of 2024, played at Dore & Totley GC, a club that has recently become a member of the Alister MacKenzie Society. The turn-out at was excellent, with 5 members playing from the club, all of whom have since become enthusiastic AMGS members. The course played well following a tough and challenging winter and spring – the wettest since the 1830’s.
The greens were pure and true and Alister MacKenzie’s design work was presented well. New holes were built in the early 2000’s by Simon Gidman (Hawtree & Co), giving the course a very spacious character as it passes through undulating parkland and woodland. The stand-out hole is the short 16th, a contoured plateau green with danger to all sides. Mike Coulthard, of Sutton Coldfield GC, won nearest the pin with a magnificent tee shot to within inches of the hole. We look forward to being hosted again at Dore & Totley GC in the near future.
