Following on from the May event at Hazel Grove, the event at Sitwell Park GC on 23rd June, was well-attended by 18 players, 9 of whom were from Sitwell Park, including the Captain, Vice-Captain, Lady Captain, and Club Director. The weather on the day was excellent if a little breezy, to make the course that bit more challenging. The course was presented to a very high standard by Ady Keys and his team and the greens were pure and true, illustrating the Alister MacKenzie design excellently.
Sitwell Park was MacKenzie’s first private commission – for Sir George Sitwell. His design work on two greens in particular, the 12th and 18th were considered ground-breaking at the time, being heavily contoured. Sadly, the owner decided to flatten these greens after the course opened (which disappointed Mackenzie), however, the Club has plans to reinstate them…
Following the golf, Glenn Charlton (Club Director), explained the work of MacKenzie in a fascinating presentation, giving the participants an excellent insight into the Club’s history, the legacy of MacKenzie’s work, and how the course still provides an excellent challenge to golfers of all abilities over a hundred years since it was built.
The event was played as a 4-person team Stableford, with 2 scores to count, the eventual winners being Jonathan Gaunt (Cavendish), Glenn Charlton (SPGC) and Adele Davison (SPGC).
